Mark A. Hughes
President of the Board of Education
Mr. Hughes has served for 16 years on the Meriden Board of Education. He was first elected in November of 2003, serving as Board Secretary from 2005 - 2007 and has held the position of Board President since December of 2007. He has served on the Transportation Committee, the Community Outreach Committee, the Alternative Disciplines Committee, the City's Washington Middle School/Falcon Field Committee and was the Chairperson of the Student Dress Code Committee and the Community Health Center Advisory Committee. While ex-officio to all committees as the Board President, he is currently the Board appointed member on the School Building Committee.
Mark brings to the Board his years of experience of working with children and teens in the Meriden community, as well as his social work background. He began his professional career in education employed as a school social worker with experience at the high school and elementary levels and he is currently a High School Administrator in the position of Dean of Students at East Haven High School in the East Haven Public School system.
Mr. Hughes believes that in order to be an effective policy maker, elected officials need to be open to input from all those involved; parents, teachers, administrators, other elected officials, and especially the students. Only with information from each of these groups can an informed and educated common sense decision be made.
