Superintendent of Schools
A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for all of your support! I am proud of our students and honored to be your Superintendent of Schools. As a lifelong Meriden resident, a product of the Meriden Public Schools and a parent of two Meriden Public School students, I care deeply about our students, staff, and school system. It is my responsibility to help provide each and all of our students with opportunities to fulfill their hopes and dreams, to give every child a chance for a better life. The Meriden Public Schools provided me with an outstanding education that gave me opportunities to fulfill so many of my dreams. As your educational leader, I am committed to making sure that all of our students and staff take charge of their learning. At graduation, we want all students to be college and career ready.
The Meriden Public Schools have much to be proud of. We offer full-day kindergarten for all of our students. We offer three expanded learning time elementary schools. These schools provide one hundred minutes of additional learning and enrichment every day. We also successfully launched Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Guidelines that are allowing our students to utilize their own devices and district-issued mobile devices. This past year we won a multimillion dollar grant from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation to create student-centered learning environments.
All students at Platt and Maloney High Schools now receive a district-issued device to ensure and support a digital-learning environment. Next year, John Barry will be our first elementary school to go to a one-to-one device program. All students at Barry will be provided a district-issued device where they can navigate engaging digital content. Our program of studies has been revised and new courses and personalized learning experiences have been added to our course offerings. Our middle schools are making plans to provide courses for their students to allow them to earn high school credits. Most notable is our students’ increased performance on academic and behavioral indicators. This is truly a credit to our hardworking students and dedicated staff.
We are committed to working with students, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, Board of Education members, City officials, service providers, and all community members who can help us support our children's dreams and desires. In order for our students to be most successful, parents must be active partners in their child's education. Together, we can provide an education that successfully meets the needs and goals of all our students.
I look forward to working with you and your children. I am proud to be your Superintendent of Schools, and I am excited to continue to make the Meriden Public Schools a model of public education success. I am inspired by our students and confident that they will continue to impress us with their performance in the classroom, on the athletic field, in our theaters, and in their volunteerism in the community. In the Meriden Public Schools, we take charge of learning!
I wish you and your family a most successful and enjoyable school year.
All the best!
Mark D. Benigni, Ed.D.
